Thanks Annika for giving them the info. Also, if anyone needs a copy of the actual summer reading assignment, there is a link to the PDF at the bottom of this page.
Mrs. Rea Ok, that font's gonna drive me nuts! Hello, freshmen! I've been asked to write for this blog this summer. I won't be your teacher, but I hope to meet with you at the beginning of the school year to discuss the book. I picked this book because it's such a great introduction to the type of classical literature you will be enjoying at RCHS. It's a classic story that everyone should know. In the intro to the book, Green says that be based the majority of his work on the classic retelling of King Arthur, Morte D'Arthur, written by Sir Thomas Malory around 1470. It was written in late middle English and is very long, but it is considered to be the authoritative work on the Arthur legends. Green (writing in 1953) wanted to capture the flowery language of Malory's work without going over the top. Do you think he succeeded? How does this language contribute the overall impact of the work? Green also felt that Malory did the best job of telling the complete legend, from sword in the stone to the final battle. But Malory based his work on several old French stories. How much is folktale and how much is Malory? And in all the years since Malory wrote, has the story evolved even more? If you have read other books about Arthur or Merlin, please share them with us!
Hello everyone! :) @MRS Rea, i have read a book that Merlin has been in, but he was not a main character, the book was called 'Dragon's Keep' by Janet Lee Carey
First, I think the language still makes it hard to read, but it helps to set the time period of the story. I haven't read any other stories relating to Merlin or King Arthur, so I can't determine how much is folk tale and how much is Malory.
The language is hard to read but I understand that it is taken place along time ago. And no I haven't read any books like in king Arthur's era But I've seen a a movie or two in kings Arthur's time period
I loved the book I didn't find the language to hard to read but the names were very confusing at times.I am done with the book and am writing the essay. I am doing the 2nd question and I am having a little bit of trouble finding info on the knights sining. reply
The language is a little bit confusing sometimes but after a while I got the hang of it. This is the first time iI have read anything about King Arthur and I do not know what Green has changed and what is based off of the french stories I am done reading the book and thought it was awesome!
Since the Narnia books are some of my favorites, and at my old school in Texas we studied out of the King James version of the Bible, the language in this book was familiar to me :)
" the Sir Percivale turned to see if the lion would attack him also; but, instead, it came and rubbed its head agenst him, and fawned upon him like a great cat. Percivale cast down his shield and rested after the fight, and the lion stood and guarded him." i loved this part of the book.
"Wake and put your amour on! You have overcome the temptations of this world, and now you may enter the Enchanted Ship and sail with me twards Carbonek." I thought this was similar to when we overcome our temptations to be with Christ in his kingdom :)
I am working on the essay and writing the second prompt. I have3 two knights but would like three. any suggestions??? and does it have to be a kinght or can it be any character like Mordred???
I have been reading the book daily and i like the story just from what i've read though i think i can write the essay so this is gonna be a fun project for me. :)
It needs to be in MLA format, and you need to choose one of the following questions to write on. (2 pages, 600 words)
1. Throughout the book, King Arthur and his knights engage in the struggle between good and evil, but in order to bring about the good, they must engage in a great amount of violence. Do you think this is justified? Could they have accomplished their goals by non-violent means? If so, how?
2. This struggle between good and evil is also represented in the book as an internal struggle. The knights do not always make good choices in their personal lives and then they must deal with the consequences. Give 2 or 3 examples of this from the book. Explain how they do or do not deal with their sins according to Biblical teachings. Quote a Bible verse to support your view.
Format: 1. Answer each prompt with a solid, well-crafted argument. 2. Use quoted material and specific references to the text to support your assertions. 3. Type the essay in 12pt. Times New Roman font 4. Adjust the paper to have 1” margins (this does NOT happen automatically in earlier versions, i.e. Word 98 or 03; you must tell Word to change this by going into page setup). 5. Include your name, date, and class period in the upper left hand corner. 6. Double space the entire paper. 7. Include the author’s full name and the title of the work in each essay. 8. Cite quotes using the following format: (Author’s last name pg#).
Hope this helps, and I look forward to meeting you!
I really can't stand this book, all of the parts with killing and action is not in detailed. But other things in the book is detailed. It really annoys me. I'm working in the essay and I've never really had to do anything like this.
You need to choose one of the following 2 questions to answer, and the MLA format means following the requirements listed below under format. The paper should be 2 pages, 600 words. It should be fine to handwrite it.

Handwritten is acceptable, although typing would be better in many ways. Apple products have great word processing programs. We do not require Word as a program, and MLA style has nothing to do with the Word program, it has to do with how you format your paper (like the heading, the line spacing, stuff like that) so using an Apple product will work just fine.
Hello, we are new to your school and are wondering which erosion you are asking us to read? Could you give us the author?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Caroline Vasquez
I meant version. Thanks, Caroline
