Jane Eyre

  1. Jane Eyre is one of my favorite victorian novels. I think you will all enjoy it. I have always wondered about the spiritual health of those living in England in the 19th century at the close of th Enlightenment and beginning of Industrialization. Charlotte Bronte draws a sharp contrast between the very uncharitable John Reed, Jane's cousin, and her closest friend in the girl's home, Helen Burns. Helen, in her humility, communicates the essence of loving Christ in spite of all circumstances. Pay particular attention to her admontion of Jane as she is on her sickbed.

  2. I was pleasantly surprised by Jane Eyre. In truth, I dreaded reading the book. It appeared to me that the story would be boring and plotless. I believed I have learned a lesson in judging a book by its cover. While reading I discovered that I had some trouble with Mr. Rivers. I cannot understand his cold demeanor and his harsh way of trying to show truth. How can a man so set on spreading the good news be so harsh ? Shouldn't he of all people share the love of Christ?

  3. Interesting comment Mykayla. In the 19th century England, some clergy only saw their professian as a job. Others had a real and compassionate heart for their fellow man and cared deeply for their flocks. Others like Mr. Rivers were so concerned with piety (living a right and pure life) that they thought they had to remain distance and cold, fearful that any emotion may lead them to fall into temptation. They were devout, but almost childlike in theri approach to their faith. I think Ms. Bronte is making a point. Jane could not fall in love with a man like that, because he was thoroughly unromantic.

  4. I just finished reading Jane Eyre...while reading the story I felt mixed emotions as things were going good and bad for Jane. It was a great book and I was surprised that I enjoyed it so much! The more I read the book, the more I loved it! Although, I was disappointed about Mr. Rochester's outcome.

  5. I found what happened at the altar shocking. And to think if Jane Eyre had not told her Uncle John what was happening in her life it might have been avoided. She had told Mr.Rochester she had no family to intervene. But she did. Does that make her a lier or is she innocent because she had not known her uncle at the time? I think it all could have been avoided Mr. Rochester's outcome if that one letter had been avoided. Well not to mention his crazy (you no what) was not there.

  6. Jane Eyre does take you on an emotional roller coaster. Imagine having to wrestle with doing the right thing, when your head tells you one thing and your heart tells you another. I actually have a friend who went through nearly the exact circumstance of Mr. Rochester. When you get back to school you will have to ask me to tell you the story. (Believe it or not, I sort of played the part of Grace Poole.) I am glad that you are enjoying this book.
Mykala, you are noticing the way in which Ms. Bronte was trying to create tension in the book. This was very common in Victorian Literature and is an important tool for authors. "If only" is exactly what the author wants you to feel.

  7. As you read there are many prominent "If onlys" Why does Ms. Bronte make them distinguished so? Ms. Bronte seems to taunt the reader with these "If onlys". You want to beg Jane to change her mind and go back especially when she is on the doors of death. Why does she stay so obstinate and stubborn?

  8. I absolutely loved this book! As Mikayla said i learned to not judge a book by its cover. I enjoyed Jane Eyre so much that I couldn't put the book down! The book was filled with many surprises, and i think that's what made it so good.

  14. I am having a hard time getting my thoughts on to paper. I can not get my ideas to flow and my writing to come together. I enjoyed the book but my essay completely stinks. Any ideas what I should do?

  16. I'm excited to hear your story Mr. Rea! Mikayla, I suggest you write down the things that really stood out to you dealing with the character(s) you are writing about. If that still does not help, scan/review the chapters referring to your character(s), it should help refresh your brain of what happened and assist you in getting your points across.

  17. As a parent I feel like Jane Eyre is a very difficult book to get your teenage boy to read over Summer. Then to blog and talk about his feelings about the book and between the characters is almost torture for someone who does not even know what he feels half the time. Had no problem with Man in the Iron Mask. Just wish there was more of a choice. I would like to know how many boys have read it and how they felt.

  18. Yeah, although I enjoyed the book. I could see why it be difficult for a boy. But the end makes it easier to get through the love and romance.

  19. That's true. Jane Eyre was a pretty romantic book that probably wouldn't spark many boys' interest, but i agree with Mikayla. The end made the book a lot better!

i totally agree with the whole boy situation. it would be very difficult for the boys to get into it and for the girls it would be hard to get into the other 3 choices. thats what i think

  23. So I finished reading Jane Eyre! These kind of books just don't interest me, but reading in general does not interest me haha. The book surprisingly wasn't as bad as I originally thought it was going to be. There were certain things that definitely kept me reading such as the situations with Mr. Brocklehurst. There was good basics and morals to the story involving Helen, and Jane's thoughts throughout the book. The essay was super easy to write though. The prompt about Helen was simple and straight to the point to answer I felt like. There was a lot of twists when it came to (Edward) Mr. Rochester and I didn't think he would become such an important character. Overall decent book!

  26. I had a hard time getting into this book but once i got started i had a fun time reading it even though i usually do not enjoy reading books like this. Like everyone else i definitely did judge the book by its cover but it turned out to be a pretty descent book. I also see how it could be a tough book for all of the guys since it was romantic. Maybe next year we could have even more of a selection to choose from. But I did have a fun time reading it :)

  27. I agree with Brittany. I think that if we had a wider selection of books we could choose from then it wouldn't be viewed so much as homework we HAVE to do over the summer. I would view it as having more freedom to choose the book I think I would like and therefore have more fun with this assignment. On a side note, i really enjoyed this book!
